Private planes and helicopters are still decades away, but a drone can put the power of flight in the palm of your hand (or your VR goggles!), so choosing the right one for your family is critical. 

Drones have become increasingly popular in recent years, and there are many options to choose from on Black Friday. We recommend deciding how you’ll use your drone before committing to a specific model, so you get exactly what you need without going over budget. 

To begin, determine what kind of camera resolution and quality you desire. Are you going to record and stream your flights on YouTube or Twitch, for example? Are you using this for professional projects such as commercials or client website videos? Or do you simply want a better view above your house’s roofline?

The DJI FPV Remote Controller 2 is included in this bundle, but if you’re going to spend the money on something like this, we recommend adding the intuitive controller with motion sensing (Opens in a new window), which makes navigating as simple as turning your wrist. 

DJI Mavic Mini Combo 2.7K Camera Drone Quadcopter 

This DJI combo is an excellent choice if you are looking for an all-in-one package that will last you a long time before you need to upgrade. Though the price is high at first, you will get a highly rated drone with a good camera, as well as three batteries with about 30 minutes of flight time each. When you add in the extra propellers (which come in handy if this is your first time flying), a protective carrying case, and a protective plastic cage for the propellers in flight, you have everything you need to get started without sacrificing much performance. 

DJI Mini SE 2.7K Camera Drone Quadcopter 

This is DJI’s most affordable option, and even the base model comes with a decent camera (2.7K) and plenty of flight time (30 minutes on a single battery). We like the photo and video-specific presents in the DJI app for better shots, and it is light enough to get under FAA registration regulations. However, it is slower (13 m/s) and has a shorter transmission range than the other DJIs on this list—though a 4km range is still impressive. 

DJI Mini 2 4K Camera Drone Quadcopter 

The near-$500 price tag of this DJI drone places it in the mid-range of models, but it outperforms the Mini SE and Mavic Mini models in several ways. This is primarily in the camera, whose 4K capabilities will appear to be a significant upgrade on a large screen, but if you’re primarily creating content for small screens, this may not be necessary. If you really want that pristine resolution, you can get it from a long way away—the 10km range is impressive, though the 31-minute battery life may not get you all the way out and back in time. If you are flying out to sea, the wind resistance is excellent, and the high-altitude capabilities (4k meters) are also excellent. 

Ryze Tech Tello Mini Drone Quadcopter 

This is the most budget-friendly drone on the list, and it’s also the cheapest. Naturally, there are some tradeoffs. The single onboard battery provides only 13 minutes of flight time, and the 5MP camera is probably not even as good as the one on your phone (it gives you just 720p resolution for your videos). This is a great place to start if you want to try drone flight for the first time, especially if you use a Playstation/Xbox controller to fly (or buy a dedicated controller) instead of tapping at your smartphone screen. 

DJI Mavic Air 2 4K Camera Drone Quadcopter 

This DJI model performs similarly to many other drones, but the camera quality is significantly improved. The 10km range and half-hour battery life are comparable to other models, but the 48MP camera, as well as the option to receive a 1080p live stream directly from the drone and some incredible hyperlapse intelligent flight modes to get the most out of that camera, are standout features. At this price, however, you’re primarily paying for the camera and processing power in the air—only one battery is included. 

When will the best drone Black Friday deals in 2023 begin? 

This year’s Black Friday falls on November 24, but if past years are any indication, drone prices will drop in the week leading up to that date – with some discounts arriving even earlier. 

If you are looking to buy a drone, chances are it’ll be a DJI. DJI’s ‘Black Friday sale’ last year ran from November 20 to November 30, and we expect it to run from November 19 to November 29 this year. 

The DJI Mavic Mini and DJI Phantom 4 Pro V2.0 will receive the most discounts from DJI in 2020. We are hoping for price drops on popular models that have since been replaced, such as the DJI Mavic Air 2 – and, if rumors about the DJI Mavic 3 Pro are to be believed, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro — this year. 

The Black Friday drone deals are not just for DJI, though. Autel Robotics, one of its main competitors, held its own Black Friday sale from November 24 to November 30 last year. The Autel Evo mini drone was discounted by $100, and the Autel Evo II 8K drone was also discounted by $100. Look for discounts from November 23 to November 29 if Autel does the same this year. 

However, not every major drone manufacturer has a record of offering significant Black Friday discounts. Last year, the pandemic’s impact on Skydio’s assembly line resulted in stock shortages. That meant it did not offer any significant discounts on US-only models like the Skydio 2 in 2020, and the same may be true this year. 

There are also large drone retailers, in addition to the manufacturers. Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy (US) and Amazon, Drones Direct, and Currys (UK) are among the best (UK). While many of these had early sales in the month leading up to Black Friday, the best deals were found during Black Friday week.
